How to Choose Your Beach Wedding Dress

Table of Contents

Picking your beach wedding dress is the iconic moment when it comes to wedding planning, but it can also be one of the most stressful moments you’ll ever come across as finding a wedding dress in the right style AND price range can be hard. When you opt for a beach wedding, too, there are certain things you need to consider while picking out a dress. A wedding dress for the Mexican beach will probably not be the same as one you would pick if getting married indoors, say in a large church.

Before you start to stress about your beach wedding take a deep breath! We’ve got your back, and below there are some ideas to help you get the best beach wedding dress for your big day.

Set your own rules

Set your own rules

Just because this is a wedding it doesn’t mean you need to restrict the styles from which you choose – you are getting married on the beach after all! And a beach wedding doesn’t restrict you to the “floaty” section of dresses at the back of the store either. You can still go for a tight gown, a corseted and full-bodied dress or sexy fitted mermaid tail dress. All you need to keep in mind is that you should be able to walk on sand easily in this dress – so a long, heavy train for example is probably a no-no as it will pull you back as you walk, and may even become dirty. This isn’t what you want your guests to be admiring and talking about while you say “I do”.

Floaty is good

The floaty, flimsy (slightly hippy-esque) dresses that can be found in most wedding dress stores are what most people think of when considering a beach wedding. This is probably because of the more relaxed and bohemian atmosphere such a venue brings. But there are practical advantages of such a dress. They are made of lighter material, they hide a multitude of body sins and they do have a certain romantic appeal. The artistic among you will probably admire the way the dress seems to move with the waves. Warning, though! If the climate is hot, like Mexico, you should probably avoid long sleeves as nothing is worse that sweating all over everyone you hug on the day.

Short and Sassy

Younger brides, or of course older brides with fantastic legs, might choose to go for a short, flirty dress. These are perfect for dealing with the heat of a beach destination, don’t restrict you on sand and provide a fun, unique twist on the traditional wedding aesthetic.

Strike a pose with a veil

Strike a pose with a veil

If you’re getting married by the sea, especially in the Caribbean, you may wish to forego a veil altogether as the wind could pick it up and carry it away completely! If you’re absolutely set on having one, however, you could consider a short veil which covers only your face as a long veil could become heavy and make it hard to get about on the beach. The closer you get to the ocean the more of a breeze you will experience – this is pleasant for your guests, but will make wearing a veil harder. A romantic and cute alternative could be to wear a simple head piece or a flower garland instead.

Happy feet

The last, and perhaps very best, tip we can give you is to be sure that you’re using the right footwear to match your wedding dress! It’s nigh impossible to wear stilettos on the sand so, unless you’re having a boardwalk put out for your beach wedding, it’s better to go for pretty flats or open-toe sandals. Try to go for something that’s not going to gather too much sand while you’re walking too. A bit of height can’t hurt either and one good option would be platformed shoes that are flat across the bottom. Remember you can always save your favourite heels for the dance floor at the reception.

Whatever you choose we want you to keep in mind that your beach wedding dress has to be right for you and your husband– it does not limit you to certain styles, foods or music. Just follow your style and have the time of your life.
