Montezuma’s Revenge – How to Avoid Getting Sick on Vacation

Table of Contents

It is a very common misconception that you are sure to get sick when you vacation in Mexico, and to an extent this can be true; the very act of traveling can upset your stomach for a few days. In fact, some people with really sensitive digestive systems can get ill just by traveling to another state! However, with some simple tips it is fairly easy to avoid Montezuma’s revenge while you are on vacation in Mexico. Here are our top tips for how to stay healthy while you enjoy your vacation in sunny Mexico;

Water

Water is so important on so many levels when it comes to staying healthy in Mexico. Obviously it might be better to drink bottled rather than tap water; this is not because the water is sub-par by health and safety standards, but more a matter of your stomach being unused to your local water. So it is really better to drink bottled water, and to make sure that you’re drinking more of it than you usually would. Failure to compensate for the heat and dehydration that comes with visiting a hot sunny clime are the biggest causes of illness amongst tourists in Mexico.

Alcohol and Overeating

Many people who get ill whilst staying in Mexico blame the water or food, but very often it is overindulgence that has caused their suffering. Remember that alcohol dehydrates you! When drinking in a hot climate you should have a glass of water after every second or third alcoholic drink to ensure that you’re keeping yourself hydrated (after every drink would be even better). We would also recommend that you avoid over indulging in creamy or overly sweet drinks.

Ice

Ice cubes are a tricky one. Though they can be a great way to cool down, some establisments outside of your hotel may use tap water to make them. Just ask at the bar if they use store bought ice-cubes (made with purified water) to prepare your drinks and, if not, opt for a refrigerated drink such as bottled beer or canned soft drinks to go with your liquor. At Hotel Mousai, you can be sure that the ice is made from purified water.

Restaurants

Restaurants

Ask your concierge what restaurants are best, or stick to your hotel’s restaurant to avoid a bad experience.

Eating on the streets

Even if you have a stomach of steel, we recommend that you avoid the street stands selling tacos. You cannot be sure of what water they use, and they tend to not have refrigeration facilities for their sauces. If you really do want the “Mexican” experience then ask a local which is the best place, and squeeze lemon over your tacos.

Chilis

Always be sure to ask your waiter how hot each of the sauces are; you might think you are pouring avocado sauce on your dinner, but the green sauces can be chilli sauces and they are often the hottest!

Meat

Even if you love your steak rare, we would recommend you opt for medium to well-done just to be on the safe side when eating in restaurants outside of the hotel.
