How to Keep Those Luscious Locks on Vacation

Table of Contents

When you’re heading out on vacation you often have a to do list that’s miles long, but the one thing most people never consider is how they’re going to keep their hair healthy and under control once they’re there. But this should be something you consider, especially if you have long hair because the humidity, sunshine, salty air and chlorine in the pool water can really wreak havoc with your hair. Following these tips, however, could give you your best vacation hair ever!

Keep Styling Products to a minimum

Remove any harsh styling products from your daily regime, if possible while you are on vacation. Things like hairspray and gels will make your hair harder to manage after being exposed to seawater and chlorine. You should also try to wash your hair every second or third day rather than every day to enhance your natural texture and volume (this is especially useful if you have naturally fine hair). Salt sprays and dry shampoos will give you a beachy look, but won’t be good for dry hair; dry hair should be treated with leave in conditioners and moisturizing styling lotions.

Comb with Care

This is an everyday rule, really, but should be given extra credence when you’re out in the breezy ocean air. The salt and humidity can ravage hair and leave it dried out and prone to breaking, so make sure you use specially designed combs with rubber-coated tips and only comb after conditioning.

Avoid the hair dryer

This is something you should really try to do as much as possible anyway, but once again it is more important when you’re going on vacation. If your hair is quite long a good solution to longer drying times is to put in a leave-in conditioner, twist your hair into a bun and let it dry this way. When you let it down again you’ll have natural beachy waves.

Make Coconut Oil your Best Friend

Coconut oil is delicious smelling, light flavored, and also very good for your skin and hair. This is a well-known remedy for dryness of the skin, some forms of acne, and can even be used to relieve the discomfort of thrush, but did you know that it can work wonders for your hair? Running a small amount from the mid-lengths to the tips can keep your hair moisturized and lustrous.

Eat Healthy Fats

Healthy fats are key to keeping your hair, and in fact your whole body, healthy. For a glossy, durable mane you should have a diet that features raw and light fats like those found in avocados, coconut, olives, or flax and hemp oil. These will go a long way to mitigating the harsh abuse that the elements dole out.

Bobby Pins

Bobby pins are your friend when it comes to exerting tight, but kind, control on your locks. Elastics will be unnecessarily harsh on your hair, which thanks to the climate will already be prone to breakages. Bobby pins, however, work on both short and long hair, and allow for more precise control of your mane. With pins you can create stylish and practical updo’s in a pinch.

If you follow these tips you’ll find that your hair is manageable and silky throughout your vacation, just remember to hydrate well!
