Is Hurricane Season Safe in Puerto Vallarta?

Table of Contents

Hurricanes and tropical storms are no laughing matter, as they can generate a whole lot of destruction if their powerful intensity strikes land.  In spite of that, hurricane season should not put a damper on your vacation plans in Mexico, particularly if you are traveling to Puerto Vallarta. Because this incredible city is located along the picturesque waters of Banderas Bay, it is blessed to sustain little to no damage as most hurricanes approach the area.

The jungle-covered mountains and the shape of the bay naturally help shield Puerto Vallarta from approaching storms. As one of the most sheltered areas along Mexico’s stunning Pacific coast, traveling during hurricane season, usually spanning from June until November, poses little risk. Of course, storms headed for the region should always be regarded with caution, though tourists are not likely to encounter any danger in this particular location.

Hurricane Kenna in 2002

In 2002, Hurricane Kenna hit Mexico’s Pacific coastline with a mighty force, but the damage in Puerto Vallarta was no where near the devastation we have seen on our TV screens of late, with only some vehicle and structure damage. Tourists who were visiting the area, as well as local residents, remained out of harm’s way whenever they followed local warnings and protocol.

Why Traveling during Hurricane Season Can be Great

It is common for in-the-know travelers who visit Puerto Vallarta often to choose to vacation during the hurricane season because of the incredible bargains. Occupancy rates are typically lower at hotels during the season, which can lead to many travel perks such as a free night’s stay, upgrades on rooms, and discounts on things ranging from dining to spa indulgences on-site.

Vacationers who crave a quieter getaway love to visit Puerto Vallarta during this time simply because there are fewer tourists in town. Hurricane season here is better known as rainy season because it is when the majority of the area’s annual rainfall occurs. Bear in mind, though, that the rain patterns are fairly predictable so that planning activities isn’t a problem.  It is usually sunny until mid to late afternoon when scattered showers approach.

Keeping Safety in Mind

Thankfully, today’s meteorologists are equipped with advanced technology that allows them to more accurately predict storms and track them. That way, if there is any actual threat of a storm hitting land, both tourists and locals have adequate time to prepare. While Puerto Vallarta is seldom impacted by hurricanes on a dangerous level, local authorities always choose to be cautious in order to ensure people in the region are not harmed. Mandatory evacuations, although rare, are implemented when necessary to help keep visitors and residents safe. Tropical storms and hurricanes that form over the Pacific usually only affect Puerto Vallarta with heavy rains and strong winds, which at times can cause flooding.  Fortunately, when the correct safety measures are followed, these conditions are typically not a real danger.

Hurricane Nora in Puerto Vallarta 2021

Hurricane season has already started this 2021, and Nora, a category 1 hurricane, decided to visit the shores of Puerto Vallarta on August 28th, 2021. However, the citizens and tourists visiting the area, followed every guideline implemented by the government, which truly helped to keep the city mostly safe.

Nora caused some minor problems that affected downtown Puerto Vallarta and the surroundings of Río Cuale, problems that are already being taken care off and that guarantee that both areas will be open once again sooner rather than later!

Also, people did not hesitate to help those in need, and plenty of stores and entrepreneurs are receiving food, clothes, towels and other items throughout the city.

Keep an eye on the news to learns about new hurricanes and storms that may occur in the area and stay safe!
