Vacation Safety in Mexico

Table of Contents

Everyone knows that the media likes to focus on the most sensational and shocking stories no matter the issue at hand. These stories are often unflattering or downright scary, and few countries have suffered so much at the hands of such reporting as Mexico. Only the worst stories make the headlines, and while there is certainly truth in many of them, the reality is that not all locations in Mexico are as dangerous as the headlines suggests. In fact, the top tourist destinations like Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos and Cancun are safer than the majority of the cities in the USA and Canada.

Vacation Safety in Mexico

You will be pleased to read that there are many safe, beautiful, and culture-rich hotspots in all areas of the country which draw in tourists year on year! These hotspots have some of the best beaches, resorts, and bars in the world, too! With some common sense, you can expect to enjoy safe and pleasant vacations in Mexico without having to lock yourself up in your hotel for safety.

So, how can you be safe on your Mexican vacation? Read on to find out:

Use Common Sense!

If you wouldn’t do it at home, don’t do it in Mexico; this is just common sense, but it’s also very effective. If you don’t do questionable things like attempting to buy drugs or heading to the more impoverished neighborhoods in town, you’re not likely to come into contact with the kind of people that will be dangerous. Of course, you might want to enjoy a wild night out or two, but just make sure that you observe the same safety rules you would at home! Despite what the media may imply, random acts of violence are really quite rare in most parts of Mexico, especially in comparison to some of the big cities of the USA. So, if you act sensibly and stay away from people acting suspiciously, you’re unlikely to encounter any trouble.

Stick Together

There are always people who love to go off the beaten track, and we think this can be the best way to really experience some parts of Mexico. Nonetheless, we urge you to observe the adage “safety in numbers” and stick together with your traveling companions. Not only will having company make the trip more fun, but you will be able to look out for each other. If you go out in a group, stay in a group and makes sure everyone on a night out leaves the club/bar together.

Understand You Aren’t Above the Law

Just because you are a tourist does not mean that you are above the law; this goes for any country in the world, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t keep this in mind. Local authorities may be sympathetic if you fall afoul of a less obvious local law, but by and large your tourist status will offer you no protection.

Mexico is a wonderful country to visit, and so long as you are sensible, you and your group are sure to remain safe.
