The hidden beach at Puerto Vallarta’s Marietas Islands is one of the highlights of any fabulous vacation to Mexico’s Pacific Coast. Playa del Amor is a hidden beach that offers visitors natural beauty, crystal clear waters, and a cute sandy beach that is hidden at the center of a huge crater, where you can also observe a thriving natural bird sanctuary. Playa del Amor is a romantic destination that provides one of the most unique days trips on Banderas Bay. Some of the activities you can enjoy on the Marietas Islands include scuba diving, snorkeling, or just relaxing and lounging on the beach that is located in the middle of the crater.
Exotic Marine Life and Blue Footed Boobies
The Marietas islands were formed thousands of years ago during a volcanic eruption yet today the islands with their hidden beach are home to hundreds of birds, marine life, and blue footed boobies, a rare breed of bird that can only be seen in a few places around the world that are famed for their blue colored feet.
Breathtaking Underwater Creatures
This location was first made famous for its diving and snorkeling by the famous oceanographer and explorer, Jacques Cousteau. Known for providing the best scuba diving, snorkeling, and even watching whales haunts, the Marietas Islands are a great spot for all kinds of underwater activities. This area is home to seahorses, large manta rays, tropical fish, and eels, amongst other sea life. There are several boat tour companies that take visitors out to watch the humpback whales who make their home here in Bay of Banderas from November until the end of March.
Playa del Amor – The Hidden Beach to Visit
When you take time to visit the islands you will definitely want to swim, snorkel, and scuba dive, but don’t leave the Marietas Islands before you have explored Playa del Amor’s hidden beach that is located between two of the islands. It only takes a few minutes for you to swim through a rocky tunnel where you will arrive to the beach that is surrounded on all sides by the walls of a crater. Here you can soak up the sun, play in the sand, and swim in the calming, cool waters. You can even explore the small cave that is right next to the beach.
This amazing hidden beach wasn’t always so tranquil and safe, however. The Mexican Government once used the Marietas Islands as a bomb testing and explosive site in the 60’s, which is what caused the crater that forms the hidden beach in the first place. The Hidden beach was the result of a large explosion. Today, however, it is one of Puerto Vallarta’s most treasured destinations for a day trip or diving excursion.
For sure, La Playa del Amor is the hidden beach that every visitor to Puerto Vallarta should experience.
