Puerto Vallarta Car Rental

Table of Contents

When you rent a car while on vacation in Puerto Vallarta, you are opening up a whole new world of possibilities for yourself.  Having unlimited access to a car allows you to explore the region around Banderas Bay on your own timetable and no one else’s.  A rental car will make it infinitely easier should you feel like roaming around and getting a feel for the local culture, whether you are visiting an awe-inspiring beach or an enchanting mountain village.  Thankfully, there are several options when it comes to renting a car in Puerto Vallarta. Before you book your Puerto Vallarta car rental, take a look at these helpful tips to ensure you have a terrific experience:

Compare Prices

Instead of going with a car rental from the first company you get a quote from, check around with several companies to get an idea of who has the best price.  Renting a compact car can range in price from $19 a day ($120 a week) to $50 a day ($300-$400 a week) plus insurance depending on the agency, which makes comparison shopping a no-brainer.  In Mexico, an economy rental vehicle is usually a small hatchback such as a Dodge i10.  Keep in mind that rental cars are not always equipped with features like an automatic transmission or air-conditioning, so specify whichever features you personally require.

Choose reputable companies

Puerto Vallarta boasts car rental agencies for all of the major companies, and it is recommended to only do business with well-known, reputable companies especially when traveling abroad.  You will find many familiar car manufacturers including Volkswagen, Nissan, Honda, General Motors, Ford, Chrysler and Chevrolet that produce many midsize and luxury vehicles similar to those sold in Canada and the U.S.

Mexican Liability Insurance

It is mandatory that you carry Mexican Liability Insurance coverage when you rent a car in Puerto Vallarta.  If you do not have proof of it, you could end up in jail until fault is established by the police if you are in an accident, no matter how minor it is.  With that said, it definitely pays to have liability insurance in Mexico!  As you are searching online for car rental quotes, take note of what the quote includes.  If the price seems too good to be true, it probably does not include Mexican Liability Insurance, which typically doubles the cost of the rental.  Again, prices from company to company can vary a whole lot, so make sure you do your research and read the fine print carefully before signing on the dotted line (or making an online deposit!).

Other Advice

After you arrive in Puerto Vallarta and pick up your rental car, you will be all set to begin your adventure in paradise.  Just as you should anywhere else, always lock your car and place any valuables out of sight (preferable in the trunk) to make a break-in less likely.  It is also a good idea to have a passenger ride along with you to help you keep an eye out on the road.  An atlas or good map can also be incredibly helpful.  Pay close attention to one-way streets here; there are a lot of them, especially in the downtown area.

Enjoy your time on the open road in Puerto Vallarta!
