One day in Yelapa at Banderas Bay

Table of Contents

One day is all you need to discover the magic of Yelapa. One day to fall in love with its rustic, carefree ambiance. One day to lose yourself in the natural beauty, serene landscapes and winding paths of the quaint fishing village. Just one day to become enamored by the friendly faces, timeless appeal and soothing lifestyle that abound from every inch of this small coastal town.

Yelapa is, and always will be, a place you go to get away from it all. This small village further south along the coast from Hotel Mousai and Puerto Vallarta is home to no more than 500 individuals where you will find it hard to get a cell phone signal. While Yelapa has taken small steps into the 21st century with the introduction of electricity some years ago, it still remains a place without cars or that hectic lifestyle common to most areas of the world. In part, that old fashioned vibe and traditional Mexican feel is what makes Yelapa such a charming and irresistible place to visit.

People who go to Yelapa aren’t looking for an adrenaline pumping excursion or a mind boggling tour, they are simply looking for relaxation in an environment so totally different from anything you might find elsewhere. While spending the day in Yelapa, you can expect to be greeted by friendly people, showered in the natural beauty of palm covered mountains and engrossed by the rich flavors of homemade pie and dangerously good raicilla, a locally produced alcoholic beverage.

Pass the day lounging under one of the many palapas down by the shore, snorkeling in the turquoise blue surf or touring the small town with its rustic housing and scattered cafes. For those looking to do some deeper exploring, ask around for the way to its stunning waterfall off the beaten path. No matter how you spend your day in Yelapa, you’re sure to fall in love.

Although the town is relatively small, its grand appeal and awe-inspiring nature make it a must see when visiting Puerto Vallarta. Just a short drive from the Garza Blanca Preserve, in an area called Boca de Tomatlan, you can get a water taxi that will take you on a 25 minute ride along the coast of Banderas Bay’s southern end, until you reach the only pier in Yelapa.  Visiting the town is easy, it is leaving that seems to be difficult for those who make the trip.
